Are all autistic people alike?

Children and adults with autism can vary somewhat in their abilities and the extent to which present the symptoms of autism. Many displays of affection and emotions and respond to friends, family and similar to people without autism.

Some may be bright and have good communication skills, while others may be mentally retarded and nonverbal. Because autism varies widely from person to person, there are labels often used to explain the level along the “spectrum” where a person falls (thus is described as autism spectrum disorder). These descriptions include having autistic tendencies, autism, being on the autism spectrum, high functioning autism and low functioning autism.

Whether a child falls along the spectrum, which are likely to have social communication problems such as lack of eye contact, difficulty maintaining a conversation, and problems to take another person’s perspective.

Some who have seen the movie Rainman or a television program about autism has a vision in your mind of the “typical” autistic person. However, autism can vary greatly from person to person. Some will talk your ear, while others are almost silent. Some can not cope with noisy and loud music, while the chaotic environments do not affect others. Should be avoided typecasting with autism, each person is very different in their own unique way.
