Can You Cure Drug Addiction with the Nicorette 1 Week Challenge?
Why can’t we just quit smoking? Because smoking is the result of a drug addiction. No, not illegal street drugs, but nicotine, a drug naturally present in tobacco. The nicorette 1 week challenge employs a patch which delivers controlled does of the drug nicotine into the body so the body doesn’t tell a person to get more nicotine by smoking. This is called a craving, something every smoker is familiar with.
The 1 week challenge is based on research that states people who quit smoking then started again, say their uncontrollable cravings for a cigarette were the reason they started smoking again Most people don’t do well handing cravings, look at all the people who fall off their diets because they have craving for high calorie foods.
The 1 week challenge would probably work if it taught people how to fight cravings as well as reducing the craving for nicotine with controlled does of the drug. As someone who wants to quit smoking, I’m not entirely comfortable with trans-dermal nicotine being delivered into my body so I won’t crave the drug. To me, it’s the same as giving a heroin addict methadone, but the concept does seem effective for many people. I’m curious as to how many people learned to fight their cravings by mainly using the social support offered and how many relied solely on the patch.
