Difference between Inpatient and Outpatient Drug Rehab
If you don’t know how to help a drug addict, you will have to choose from two primary types of addiction treatment programs: inpatient and outpatient.
Knowing the similarities and differences of these two programs will make it easier for an addict and his family to choose which is best for his needs. To start with, let’s identify the similarities between outpatient and inpatient drug rehab:
- Both treatments utilize individual and group therapy.
- Both programs educate the addict and the family about the nature of addiction while guiding them through monitoring and goal setting of those goals.
After identifying the similarities it is best also to identify the difference between the two programs:
- The most obvious difference between the two is the location of the patient during treatment. As what the name implies inpatient treatment program requires the patient to stay at the treatment center for several days. Your stay in the rehab will depend on the severity of the case. After completing the inpatient intensive treatment, the patient is advised to receive extensive outpatient treatment.
- · Outpatient treatment program permits the patient to remain at home while having some medications. So, it allows the patient to have a normal life with his family while under the program. Most of the time, the patient attend outpatient treatment during the day.
- Inpatient treatment usually needs to attend treatment per week and the length of the program depends on the rehab center policies and the individual needs of the addict.
Partial hospitalization is another option that some addicts can choose. The treatment is done in the hospital at the morning 3 to 7 days per week for 3 to 12 hours per day. He will be sent home at night.
If you are still undecided as to what program to choose from maybe it will help you if know the advantages of each programs. The advantages of outpatient program are the following:
- You can continue your daily work while under treatment
- Less expensive as compared to inpatient treatment
- You have the liberty to be with your family
- You have a supportive household that will make sure that you are attending the treatment programs properly.
The only advantage that inpatient treatment has is that your treatment and recovery will be monitored properly since you are in the institution.
It would be best if the patient will have the liberty to choose which treatment process does he wants. By doing this, you are sure that he will cooperate in the treatment process without any difficulties. The importance is that you help a drug addict get clean.
