IBS and Spastic Colon, It’s All the Same

Irritable Bowel Syndrome, or IBS, is also referred to as having a spastic colon. Whatever you choose to call it, it’s not a pleasant experience. The symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome are numerous, and all of them are unpleasant. IBS symptoms include abdominal pain and discomfort, bloating and changes in bowel movements that seem to have no cause. Sometimes these symptoms are relieved by having a bowel movement, sometimes they aren’t.

People who have IBS frequently suffer from diarrhea and constipation. Diarrhea can be most unpleasant, and frequent diarrhea can stop people from doing the things they enjoy as they are constantly on the lookout for the closest ladies room or mens room. That camping trip in the woods? Forget about it if the facilities are not nearby. Having nearly constant diarrhea can be the worst symptom for many people as it really affects their social life.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome is not something that’s cured, IBS is managed with changes in the foods a person eats, and with special supplements. Don’t just assume you have IBS; see a doctor to rule out any more serious medical conditions that may have the exact same symptoms. Irritable Bowel Syndrome isn’t a fatal disease, it just an irritating condition which can be managed. It can also be embarrassing, so tell people you have a spastic colon instead, if you want. It sounds better than Irritable Bowel Syndrome.
